What it is:

Phase 1 of the Rack Scanner is live — built for schools, small businesses, and makers who need a compact, affordable scanning solution. It brings together a Raspberry Pi 4, a managed network switch, and a dedicated barcode/QR scanning camera to help streamline inventory tracking, student ID verification, and asset management — all housed in the DeskPi RackMate T1.

Why we built it:

In school and small business environments, we repeatedly saw friction around expensive scanning hardware, messy unorganized setups, and systems that are hard to maintain. This first release focuses on proving that a clean, rack-mounted Pi-based scanner can replace expensive dedicated hardware — making the experience faster, more accurate, and easier to manage.

Built to evolve:

The foundation is intentionally modular and expandable. Next, we’ll strengthen logging and reporting, improve scanning accuracy with better camera hardware, and enhance connectivity with a fully managed switch
